What Equipment is Important in Creating a Wedding Video?

As someone deeply involved in the wedding industry, I often get queries about the behind-the-scenes action. One question that frequently pops up is about the essential equipment for creating a mesmerizing wedding video.

It’s important that you have a basic understanding of what to expect for several reasons. First, knowing what your videographer has on deck BEFORE the wedding will head off a lot of friction after the day is done. It’s a sure bet that if they can’t talk you through their wedding video equipment- they aren’t going to produce a great video.

Second, this lets you understand what equipment will exist the day of your wedding. If we show up and start waving lots of fancy looking gear in your face- it can be totally intimidating.

Let’s delve into the world of videography gear and shed some light on the tools of the trade.

The Foundations: Cameras

Digital Cameras

At the heart of any videography setup is the camera. High-end DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are the go-to choices for many wedding videographers. They offer excellent video quality, flexibility with lens choices, and adaptability in diverse lighting conditions.

We personally use the Sony Alpha series of mirrorless cameras. Honestly, if you’re reading this post 2022, and your videographer doesn’t have a mirrorless camera- that’s a red flag.

Drone Cameras

For those breathtaking aerial shots of the venue or a unique perspective of the wedding procession, drone cameras are indispensable.

A note about drones as they relate to wedding videography equipment. Always be wary of a videographer who wants to charge extra for these shots. They are simply not something that can be guaranteed to a couple. Wind, rain, air space restrictions- all of these things impede the videographers ability to snag these shots. They are not something that can be reliably guaranteed and shouldn’t be treated as such.

The Unsung Hero: Audio Equipment

Lavalier Microphones

While visuals capture attention, clear audio anchors the experience. Lavalier (or lapel) microphones are discreet, clip-on microphones that attach to the bride, groom, or officiant, ensuring crisp audio of the vows and key moments.

Audio Recorders

External audio recorders capture high-quality sound and provide a backup in case of any issues with the camera’s built-in recording.

Stability and Movement: Supporting Gear

Tripods

To ensure stable and shake-free shots, a sturdy tripod is fundamental. It provides a stationary base for capturing key moments like the ceremony, speeches, and first dance.

Gimbal Stabilizers

For dynamic, cinematic shots that move with the subjects, gimbals are essential. They stabilize the camera, allowing for smooth tracking shots, even when the videographer is walking or moving quickly.

Those shots you see with the floating slow motion? Those are gimbal shots. They are only attainable with stabilization equipment- so if you have a wedding videographer without one,

Enhancing the Ambiance: Lighting Equipment

LED Panels

While natural light is a videographer’s best friend, supplemental lighting can be crucial, especially for indoor events or evening receptions. Portable LED panels provide adjustable lighting to brighten up scenes without overwhelming them.

On-Camera Lights

These are smaller lights mounted on the camera itself, useful for on-the-go illumination during dynamic shots. These are most prominent during exit shots and dancing during the reception.

The Final Touch: Post-Production Tools

Video Editing Software

The magic often happens in the editing room. Software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve allows videographers to stitch together footage, adjust colors, add music, and craft the final wedding film.

In conclusion, creating a captivating wedding video is a symphony of art and technology. The right wedding video equipment, combined with a videographer’s creativity and expertise, brings to life memories that couples can cherish forever.
